Farming since 1983, Vehbi Ersoz always thought there were some problems with the conventional farming methods. Using a different pesticide for each varmint and a different fertilizer for each missing substance in the soil made him question the function and procedures in conventional agriculture. Favoring a more holistic perspective in agriculture, he tried many methods to enrich the soil and increase the soil microorganisms, which in turn do the actual work. In his region he brought many leading and innovative techniques to life. Some of them are greenhouse farming, organic farming, biodynamic agriculture and Shumei method of agriculture. As a side benefit of applying many different techniques, he discovered that methods applied in one philosophy, may in... |

Analysis of the distribution of organic farming and its determinants is a major challenge for the construction of scenarios related to the evolution of organic farming that take the set of factors that limit or facilitate conversions and their sustainability into account. In order to support different development scenarios for organic farming in view of environmental and marketing challenges, an econometric and geostatistic study was initiated in the PACA region. The approach consists of three stages. The first stage involves the construction, over a 20-year period, of a longitudinal spatial database concerning certified organic producers and distributors. This database is georeferenced at the plot level. It will then be necessary to statistically analyse... |

Organic farming is a promising agricultural method with positive effects on the human ecological and social environment. Governments have taken over a major role in defining organic farming by creating legal standards. Many countries all over the world have established a certification and accreditation system in order to protect the justified expectations of consumers with regard to processing and controlling the product quality of organic goods and to protecting producers from fraudulent trade practices. As they are relevant to international trade, these standards do not only influence the organic farming movement on the national level but also have a converse impact across national borders. Organic farming was established in a bottom-up process as... |

Often local and organic food producers and their supply chains face two main challenges: high logistical costs and complex distribution, and estab-lishing lasting relations with the consumers. Conven-tional supply chains drive the costs down through benefits of economies of scale and have therefore a competitive advantage over the small initiatives. At the same time the conventional supermarket chains are part of a bigger food system and cannot efficiently meet changing consumer demands. This creates a window of opportunity for the local and organic food enterprises such as the Dutch Willem&Drees case study shows. In order to seize this opportunity new ways of cooperation and communications are needed. This means creation of short food supply chains... |

With 67,000 ha and 1,200 organic farms (OF), the Midi-Pyrénées region is the biggest agricultural area in France and second only to the Pays de Loire region in number of farms. Organic farming has developed rapidly over the past 15 years due to the steep increase in the demand for organic products. However, this was not always the case due to several factors linked to technical difficulties: market access, wide use of imports, a trend towards industrialisation, difficulties in mastering techniques, particularly for the production of high quality durum wheat, the ineffectiveness or absence of organisations intended to help producers, etc. As a result, the Midi-Pyrénées Regional Council, which had supported organic farming for a long time, sponsored... |

Remote rural areas in East Germany are confronted with severe problems like a high unemployment rate and the migration of young people. Networks between enterprises, the public sector and civil society are viewed as being important for the rise of new development strategies and projects (e.g. in development programs like LEADER and “Regionen aktiv”). This article deals with the questions which networks and organisa-tions the organic farmers participate in and whether this engagement plays a signifi-cant role for rural development. |

Improved organic farming methods that enable more sustainable use of natural resources are numerous and are applied in almost every region of this planet. However, when it comes to spreading and adapting these methods to specific ecological and socio-economic contexts, we know only little about what factors influence the learning processes involved. This study aims at a thorough assessment of factors that are enabling or hindering knowledge co-production in organic farming in general and of sustainable rice farming in particular. Following a qualitative multilevel analysis, special emphasis is placed on understanding how the socio-economic, cultural and ecological context is constituted (macro-level), how key stakeholder groups collaborate and enhance... |

Growth processes are often problematic for small-scale farms as they may disturb their delicate balance of basic internal resources, like labor, buildings, machinery, land and animals. Most of these resources cannot be increased in linear processes and the smaller the unit the more problematic the task of realignment of resources becomes. Thus small-scale farmers often feel growth as enforced upon them by outside factors, e.g. a market partners. Growing enterprises in processing and trading need more supply and obviously are not eager to deal with more small suppliers, as this tends to mean higher transaction costs and varying qualities. However, there are examples where dedicated supply chain actors actively engage in preserving small scale structures and... |
